Inside MUI Soil

MUI is an everyday tableware collection rooted in local tradition. Thoughtfully crafted, each piece is pleasant to the touch and becomes a natural part of daily life over time. In this series, we share the core philosophy that shaped MUI —from the manufacturing process to the moments it accompanies at your table.

MUI and "Soil"

Defined by a balanced contrast between clay and glaze, MUI tableware has a quiet presence that brings out the character of the material and the local environment that nurtured it. Soil as part of our everyday surroundings, soil as the material for tableware — here, we explore the enduring relationship between MUI and the soil from which it is born.

A Sense of Place

MUI’s simple design that highlights the inherent beauty of its materials is inspired by the Japanese idea of Fudo.

Fudo (literally, “wind and earth”) is the character of a place – a region’s environment including climate, geology, and scenery, as well as the culture and ways of life that are shaped by it. MUI seeks to capture this sense of connection with the land.

From a Land of Ceramics

MUI clay originates in the Tono region of central Japan. With rich granite deposits for clay production and a hilly terrain suitable for building kilns, Tono has long been a center of ceramic production. Over centuries, this environment has nurtured a rich culture of pottery and porcelain.

Granite rock is ten millions of years old, with subtle variations in color and texture even within the same quarry. Extracting, separating, and storing it according to origin and particle size requires a trained eye. MUI clay is handled with the same care, honoring the natural beauty inherent in these ancient materials.

Clay is blended with careful attention to its composition.

The clay is shaped in molds, where moisture and thickness are adjusted.

The Feel of Soil

While MUI’s color allow the character of the earth, thoughtful design details ensure ease of use at the table.

From carefully composed clay to the smooth outer finish of each bowl, every piece is shaped by hand so that the material can settle naturally into everyday life.

Rich Variations

No two MUI pieces are exactly alike. Thoughtfully crafted from clay deeply rooted in Fudo, each piece carries a unique heritage.

We invite you to enjoy these differences—to let your MUI pieces accompany the shifting seasons, small moments, and quiet rituals of everyday life.
